Located 130 miles east of Los Angeles in Southern California’s Colorado Desert region, the state-of-the-art facility will add beds, improve safety, reduce recidivism and drive economic development.
Construction has begun on the new 516,000-sq.-ft. East County Detention Center in Indio, Calif. HOK collaborated with Riverside County to design the modern detention center to replace an overpopulated, 353-bed jail facility built in the 1950s.
The four-story structure will increase detention center capacity while providing effective healthcare and support programs for inmates. Upon completion in December 2017, the 1,626-bed detention center facility will represent a net addition of 1,273 beds to the county’s overall detention center bed capacity while offering crucial medical care and recidivism reduction programs.
